London Right Now Episode 1: Western Fair, IKEA Coming to London, and a City on the Grow

Welcome to the first episode of London Right Now, a new local show covering what's happening around the Forest City: events, development, businesses, real estate and the stories Londoners are actually talking about. I'm Craig Powell, a London REALTOR®, and I wanted a place to share what's going on in this city without the noise.

Here's what we cover in Episode 1.

The Western Fair is back

The 149th Western Fair ran September 11 to 20, 2026 at Western Fair District (316 Rectory Street). It's one of Canada's oldest community traditions, and for ten days every September it fills the east end with lights, rides and food. Whether you go for the midway or just the mini donuts, it's a reminder of how much of London's identity is tied to that site.

IKEA is coming to London

This is the one people keep messaging me about. IKEA Canada is opening its first compact store in the country right here in London, at White Oaks Mall (1105 Wellington Road), on September 29, 2026.

A few details from IKEA's announcement:

  • About 43,000 square feet, roughly a fifth the size of the Burlington store
  • Over 2,500 everyday and seasonal items, plus room sets
  • About 400 furniture pieces you can buy and take home the same day
  • Full IKEA range available to order, with delivery and collection options
  • Food, including the meatballs

Bigger projects like kitchen planning are handled at a separate Plan and order point on Wonderland Road South, and the Wilton Grove Road pick-up location stays open for order collection.

Why it matters for London's growth

A national retailer choosing London for a first-of-its-kind format says something about where the city is headed. Add new housing, new businesses and steady population growth, and you get a city that keeps changing. For anyone thinking about buying, selling or moving here, that context matters: neighbourhoods near new retail and transit tend to get attention, and it's worth understanding what's coming before you decide where to land.
