Could you live in an apartment where owning a car basically wasn't part of the plan? That's the question behind the lead story in Episode 2 of London Right Now, my weekly look at what's happening in London, Ontario.
The story: 980 apartments, 7 parking spaces
This is really two connected applications from Foundation Development Fund at 57-75 Wellington Road and 60-68 High Street, on the edge of downtown London: a 22-storey tower with 440 units and a 32-storey tower with 540 units, together proposing 980 apartments with just 7 parking spaces, shared between the two buildings, along with roughly 570 bicycle parking spaces. Both are at the Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment stage, with a public meeting scheduled for September 29, 2026. Nothing has been approved, and staff reports and council decisions aren't out yet.
Low-parking and car-light buildings are a real trend in Ontario cities. Supporters point to lower construction costs, more homes on the same land, and a location that works with transit, walking and cycling. Critics worry about street parking, visitors, and residents who still need a car occasionally. Both views are worth hearing, and I'd like to know where you land.
What it could mean for renters and buyers
More supply is generally good news for renters. If you're weighing a purchase, buildings like this also shape the neighbourhoods around them, from demand for local shops and transit to how nearby condo and home values move over time. I can't tell you how any one project will affect a specific property, but I can help you look at the surrounding area with clear eyes.
Also on the show: this weekend's events
London Comic Con: September 26 and 27, 2026. At the J-AAR Expo Centre, Western Fair District (845 Florence Street). Check the London Comic Con website for tickets and guests.
Western Homecoming: September 25 to 27, 2026. Western University's homecoming weekend includes the Mustangs football game, the Mustangs Corral and alumni events. Graduates from years ending in 1 or 6 are celebrating reunion years.
If you're heading to either, expect busy roads around Western and the Western Fair District, so plan your parking. Fitting, given this week's top story.
